“Congratulations to all of the 2013 Nobel Prize recipients. Their achievements highlight the remarkable impacts of sustained investments in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. I am proud to note that many of this year’s recipients benefited from support by the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the National Institutes of Health. Unfortunately, we are mired in an unnecessary shutdown that is preventing vital research from continuing and is impeding American scientific pursuits. These awards provide an important reminder of the critical research supported by federal investments.”
