Ranking Member Johnson Statement on Majority Letters to State Attorneys General and Environmental Groups

(Washington, DC) - Earlier today, 13 Republican Members of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology sent letters to 17 state attorneys general and eight environmental organizations requesting documents related to  their work on misinformation regarding climate change.

Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) offered the following statement:

“I have just received copies of the letters and want to review them before making any extended comment.  However, I find it ironic that Committee Republicans—who have been willing to impugn the scientific integrity of some of the nation’s leading climate scientists at NOAA in addition to subpoenaing NOAA Administrator Dr. Kathryn Sullivan in a baseless attempt to attack climate science, would express concerns in their letters to the Attorneys General  that ‘efforts to silence speech are based on political theater rather than legal or scientific arguments…’  Today’s action appears to be just another attempt to try to divert attention from the need for Congress to finally address the reality of climate change.”
