Chairman Gordon Applauds Dr. Bement’s Service at NSF

(Washington, DC) – Today, Dr. Arden L. Bement, Jr., Director of the National Science Foundation (NSF), announced his departure from NSF to lead Purdue University’s new Global Policy Research Institute (GPRI) in West Lafayette, Indiana. Dr. Bement will begin his new position as GPRI Director on June 1, 2010.

House Science and Technology Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) offered the following statement:

“Dr. Arden Bement and his staff at NSF provided very helpful input and feedback during the development of the America COMPETES Act. This monumental legislation invests in American R&D and STEM education to help strengthen our competitive position in the 21st century global economy. I applaud NSF’s success in implementing the COMPETES programs, especially the expanded Noyce Teacher Scholarship program, and managing their Recovery Act funding so well.

Dr. Bement’s dedication and hard work at the National Science Foundation and the National Institute of Standards and Technology is greatly appreciated and respected throughout the science and technology community. I applaud Dr. Bement’s years of public service and wish him luck on his future endeavors.”

Research and Science Education Subcommittee Chairman Daniel Lipinski (D-IL) offered the following statement:

“As Chairman of the Research and Science Education Subcommittee, which is responsible for the National Science Foundation, it was my privilege to work closely with Dr. Bement to improve and elevate the NSF. Dr. Bement never forgot either his engineering roots or his time in the Midwest. As an engineer, he could not see a problem without wanting to solve it, and he did a great deal to enhance America’s competitiveness and respond to our STEM education challenges. And as a Midwesterner, he did so with grace and soft-spoken but determined leadership. Our loss will be Purdue’s gain, and I wish Dr. Bement well in his return to academia.”
