Chairwoman Johnson Applauds First Image of a Black Hole by Event Horizon Telescope Team and NSF
(Washington, DC) – Today, the Event Horizon Telescope researchers in coordination with the National Science Foundation announced that they have succeeded in capturing the first ever image of a supermassive black hole. The Event Horizon Telescope project links telescopes around the globe allowing scientists a new way to study distant objects in the universe. The black hole observed in the image is found at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy and has a mass 6.5 billion times that of our sun.
Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) made the following statement.
“I would like to congratulate NSF and the entire Event Horizon Telescope team for their amazing breakthrough. This achievement is an incredible display of the importance of international scientific collaboration and the discoveries that can be made when this nation is willing to invest in cutting-edge scientific research.
“The Event Horizon Telescope team’s ingenuity and triumph will no doubt inspire the next generation of scientists, and that will result in what I anticipate will become a long list of groundbreaking discoveries. I am excited to see where this journey takes us as we continue to delve deeper into the mysteries of our universe.”
