Chairwoman Johnson Calls for Strengthened Climate Action after IPCC Report Release
(Washington, DC) – Today, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its report titled, Climate Change 2021: The Physical Science Basis. A topline finding from authors of the report is that human influence has unequivocally warmed the atmosphere, ocean, and land. The IPCC is currently in its Sixth Assessment cycle, and this report is the first of three working group reports that lead up to the release of the IPCC’s Synthesis Report in 2022.
“This report is a call to action,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “We have known for decades the dangers of unmitigated greenhouse gas emissions, but this report is the strongest wake-up call yet. Humans are the driving force of warming, the impacts of climate change are already here, and if we don’t come together as a global community to invest in innovative ways to drastically decrease emissions, the impacts will be devastating. As Chairwoman of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I remain committed to following the science and continuing to bring forth effective, bipartisan legislation that will ensure we have the tools to work towards science-based solutions to the climate crisis. I thank the authors of this report, and the reports before it, for giving us the knowledge and awareness of the state of our climate. The science here is clear. We must act now.”
