Chairwoman Johnson Comments on Final Pebble Mine Environmental Impact Statement
(Dallas, TX) – Today, the final Environmental Impact Statement for the Pebble Mine, a massive proposed open-pit gold and copper mine at the heart of Bristol Bay, Alaska, was released by the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Bristol Bay Watershed is home to the world’s largest natural sockeye salmon run which is an integral part of the social and cultural heritage for native Alaskan tribes. It also supports more than 10,000 American jobs and generates hundreds of millions of dollars in economic output.
Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) made the following statement.
“The Trump Administration’s decision to allow the permitting of the Pebble Mine, despite the very real and potentially devastating environmental consequences of this action, is disturbing. Time and time again, this Administration has prioritized the interests of industry and developers over the environment and public health of Americans. We have known for years that the development of Pebble Mine would be detrimental to the environment and ecosystems, economy, and the health of the residents of the Bristol Bay Watershed. To claim that this project would not result in “long-term changes in the health of the commercial fisheries in Bristol Bay,” is misguided and dishonest to the Americans who stand to be impacted.”
