Chairwoman Johnson Statement on SCOTUS Decision that Undermines EPA Authority

(Dallas, TX)—Today, the Supreme Court narrowed EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants in its decision in West Virginia v. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. In January 2022, Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) joined Chairs Pallone (D-NJ), Castor (D-FL), and over 190 Members of the House and Senate, in submitting an amicus brief to the Supreme Court on this case, expressing support for EPA’s ability, which was provided by Congress through the Clean Air Act, to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

“Today’s Supreme Court decision in West Virginia vs EPA marks another blow to Americans’ health and wellbeing,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “This decision to undermine the Clean Air Act by narrowing the EPA’s authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions is a step backwards on the progress we have made to address climate change, and it will keep the EPA from carrying out its core mission to protect public health and the environment.”
