Chairwoman Johnson’s Statement on Stalled White House Climate Panel

(Washington, DC) – According to recent media reports, the proposed White House panel within the National Security Council (NSC) that would conduct a review of climate science has been indefinitely delayed. In February 2019, Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) of the House Science, Space & Technology Committee, along with the Chairmen of the Armed Services, Energy & Commerce, and Natural Resources Committees wrote to President Trump to express concerns about the proposed panel.

Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) made the following statement.

“I am relieved to hear that the White House’s misguided proposal to use the National Security Council to try to undermine the scientific consensus on climate has stalled. This effort appeared to be a political sideshow, not a legitimate scientific exercise, and has been a distraction from the important mission of the NSC. It is long past time for all our elected officials to acknowledge the overwhelming evidence that the climate is changing rapidly and that these changes are primarily caused by human activity. I hope the President will shift his approach to climate change and work with Republicans and Democrats in Congress to find climate solutions.”
