Chairwoman Johnson's Statement on the WHOSTP's Report on Sustained Arctic Observation

Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson's (D-TX) statement on the White House Office of Science and Technology report, On the Need to Establish and Maintain a Sustained Arctic Obersving Network.

I was pleased to receive the Office of Science and Technology Policy's report, On the Need to Establish and Maintain a Sustained Arctic Observing Network. This report is extremely timely as NOAA released their Arctic Report Card today, which details how shifting seasons and extreme weather in the rapidly warming Arctic region are upending what was previously considered normal and impacting both the people who call it home and communities around the globe. The report from OSTP makes it clear that improved and sustained Arctic observations will help us understand, prepare for, and respond to climate change around the world. Arctic research is a collaborative effort between Federal agencies, Indigenous communities, academia, and the private sector, and I am glad to see that this report emphasizes the partnerships needed to advance our national Arctic strategy. As Chairwoman of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology I support enhancing our activities to develop and implement a sustained Arctic observation network and encourage the researchers, staff, and Indigenous knowledge holders whose dedicated efforts deepen our understanding of the climate crisis.
