Chairwomen Johnson and Horn Comment on the Resignation of Doug Loverro
(Washington, DC) – Yesterday afternoon, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Administrator Jim Bridenstine announced that Associate Administrator for Human Exploration and Operations (HEO) Doug Loverro had resigned from his position effective the previous day. Mr. Loverro stepped into the Associate Administrator for HEO role six months ago, replacing his predecessor, William Gerstenmaier, who had been removed from the same position less than a year ago.
“I was shocked to hear that the head of NASA’s human spaceflight program had abruptly resigned just days before NASA plans to launch its critical DM-2 crewed mission to the International Space Station, and I trust that NASA Administrator Bridenstine will ensure that the right decision is made as to whether or not to delay the launch attempt,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “Beyond that, Mr. Loverro’s resignation is another troubling indication that the Artemis Moon-Mars initiative is still not on stable footing. I look forward to clarification from NASA as to the reasons for this latest personnel action.”
“I am deeply concerned over this sudden resignation, especially given its timing, eight days before the first scheduled launch of American astronauts on American soil in almost a decade,” said Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Chairwoman Kendra Horn (D-OK). “Under this Administration, we’ve seen a pattern of abrupt departures that have disrupted our nation’s efforts at human space flight. The bottom line is that, as the Committee that oversees NASA, we need answers.”
