Chairwomen Johnson and Sherrill Applaud EPA Administrator on Actions to Strengthen Environmental Justice

(Washington, DC) – Today, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael Regan directed all EPA offices to immediately integrate environmental justice considerations into their plans and actions. Additionally, the Administrator is engaging environmental justice leaders and underserved communities directly to discuss the importance of EPA leadership as it relates to the burden of pollution on those communities. This announcement comes just one week after the White House formed the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council.
“Marginalized and underserved communities have historically been disproportionately burdened by pollution, and are also more likely to bear the brunt of the destructive impacts of the climate crisis,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “Administrator Regan’s direction to all EPA offices today to take crucial steps to better serve these communities is a testament to the Administrator’s leadership and commitment to building an equitable America. I applaud the Administrator for this action, and I look forward to continuing to work with the EPA and President Biden to ensure environmental justice for all.”
“Environmental justice needs to be a core focus as we work to tackle the climate crisis,” said Environment Subcommittee Chair Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ). “That means as we organize to confront this issue as a nation we also need to work to undo historical wrongs against communities of color and ensure no community is left behind as we build resiliency for the climate challenges ahead. I applaud EPA chief Regan for directing the agency to redouble their attention on environmental justice and I look forward to working on this issue together.”
