Chairwomen Johnson and Stevens Statements on the 70th Anniversary of the Establishment of the National Science Foundation
(Washington, DC) – Yesterday was the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the National Science Foundation (NSF).
“Seventy years ago, after the second world war demonstrated the critical importance of scientific innovation for meeting the needs of society, Congress established the National Science Foundation,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “Since then, the Foundation’s support for research across all fields of science has laid the groundwork for countless benefits for society, with groundbreaking advances ranging from the early internet, doppler weather radar, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), to the detection of gravitational waves. And today, NSF is funding researchers across the country as they work to advance our understanding of the novel coronavirus and help the nation combat and recover from this public health crisis. The past seven decades of NSF have been incredibly rewarding for the American people and we will undoubtedly witness more revolutionary science come out of the agency for the years to come.”
“For 70 years, the National Science Foundation has promoted the progress of science, supporting basic research to create knowledge and reach new horizons,” said Chairwoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) of the Subcommittee on Research and Technology. “As Chair of the Research and Technology Subcommittee, it is an honor to work alongside the National Science Foundation to advance scientific research and innovation, and I congratulate them on reaching this incredible milestone.”
