Democrats Announce Subcommittee Assignments and Ranking Members

(Washington, DC) – The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology held an Organizational Meeting, Wednesday, January 23, to approve the Committee rules, oversight plan, and subcommittee rosters.  The Democratic Caucus elected Subcommittee Ranking Members and selected subcommittee assignments yesterday.

Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) said, “I look forward to working with Chairman Smith and all the Members of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee, and I am hopeful that we can make real progress on a host of important matters, including the health of our national R&D enterprise, STEM education, the future of the nation’s civil space program, ensuring the availability of critical weather satellites, climate change and its impacts, energy innovation, and advanced manufacturing, to name just a few.  We have an exceptionally strong and enthusiastic group of new and returning Ranking Members on the Committee, and I know that all of us on the Democratic side of the aisle are eager to get down to business on the critical issues awaiting us.”

Rep. Donna F. Edwards (D-MD) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Space.

“I am grateful to serve as Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Space,” said Congresswoman Edwards. “The Space Subcommittee has jurisdiction over the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), civilian and commercial space activities, and aviation research and development. Having worked years ago on NASA’s Spacelab project, I look forward to the opportunity to develop a pioneering space policy that will uphold our international competitiveness, spur innovation in the United States, and build the jobs and workforce that have contributed so greatly to our economy, including in Maryland’s 4th Congressional District. I look forward to working with Subcommittee Chairman Steven Palazzo (R-MS) and my colleagues on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee in the 113th Congress.”

Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Energy.

“The development of new, clean, and renewable energy sources is critical for our future economic growth and environmental health,” said Congressman Swalwell.  “As the Ranking Member on the Energy Subcommittee, I will work to make sure the federal government supports these activities and that our nation leads the way in energy research and technological innovation.”

Rep. Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Environment.

“I look forward to leading the Democratic members of the Environment Subcommittee and to substantive collaboration with our colleagues across the aisle,” said Congresswoman Bonamici. “From climate change to oceanic research, the issues in this subcommittee present important policy questions that must be answered with science to protect our planet.”

Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Research.

"As Ranking Member of the Research Subcommittee, I remain committed to promoting innovative research that will create American jobs and economic development," said Congressman Lipinski. "Just as important is improving STEM education so we better prepare young Americans for the jobs of tomorrow."

  • Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-CT)

Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-FL) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Technology.

"A successful economy requires innovation and imagination," said Congresswoman Wilson.  "The Subcommittee on Technology can help spur economic growth and job creation by promoting the development of important new technologies. I look forward to building on the subcommittee's proud bipartisan tradition in my role as Ranking Member."

Rep. Dan Maffei (D-NY) was elected Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight.

“I am honored to serve as the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Oversight,” said Congressman Maffei. “The Oversight Subcommittee has jurisdiction over several federal agencies that play an important role in enhancing our nation’s competitiveness, supporting our growing science and technology sectors, and training the next generation of American workers.  I look forward to working with Subcommittee Chairman Paul Broun (R-GA) and all my colleagues to ensure these important federal agencies are operating efficiently and effectively to spur economic development and create good paying jobs across the country.”
