Gordon Chosen to Lead House Science Committee
U.S. House of Representatives Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi today nominated Rep. Bart Gordon (TN-06) for the Chairmanship of the House Science Committee for the 110th Congress. The full Democratic Caucus unanimously approved the nomination.
"I am honored by this assignment," said Rep. Gordon. "Under my leadership, the Science Committee will be the committee of 'good ideas.' We will be reaching out to individuals and groups on the Hill and off to participate at every opportunity, share their ideas and work with our Committee to assure America’s competitiveness in the world."
Throughout his service in Congress, Rep. Gordon has been widely recognized for his commitment to responsible, bipartisan efforts to advance science, technology and education.
"Democrats, working in partnership with our Republican counterparts, have an opportunity to positively affect issues from education and research to energy and security. This is an opportunity we must not neglect," added Rep. Gordon.
Among the first orders of business for the Committee in the 110th Congress, incoming Chairman Gordon anticipates that efforts will continue to assure U.S. workers, teachers and students are equipped with the tools they need to compete in the changing global marketplace, as well as advancing measures to speed U.S. energy independence and exercise better stewardship of our energy resources.
Gordon will assume the Chairmanship at the start of his 12th term in Congress in January 2007. A native of Murfreesboro, he is the dean of the Tennessee Congressional delegation.
The Science Committee maintains jurisdiction over all Federal nonmilitary scientific and technology research and development programs on which the Federal Government spends more than $30 billion a year. The Committee also is charged with ensuring that Federal investments in science and technology are focused in the right areas and are succeeding in boosting our nation's economy.
