Gordon Comments on National Science Board’s Release of Science and Engineering Indicators

(Washington, DC) U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN) today commented on the National Science Board’s (NSB) release of their 2008 Science and Engineering Indicators.

The Indicators are a biannual record of data on the U.S. and international science and engineering enterprise, from elementary and secondary education through industry, technology and the global marketplace. As a result of the America COMPETES Act – landmark science and math education and research legislation authored by Gordon and Congressional leaders – NSB is now required to submit Indicators to both the President and Congress by January 15 of each even-numbered year.

Chairman Gordon joined NSB Chairman Steven Beering today in the release of the Indicators.

The Chairman offered the following comment:

“While the Science and Technology Committee has not yet had an opportunity to review the findings of the 2008 Science and Engineering Indicators, I think we can all agree that the U.S. needs to remain vigilant about our competitiveness in the 21st Century global marketplace.”

“The America COMPETES Act – signed into law last August – was a great step toward more funding for the basic research that underpins our economic growth and toward a highly skilled science and technology workforce that will help keep the highest paying jobs here in the U.S. However, as demonstrated by this year’s omnibus budget, we still have our work cut out for us. I welcome the ongoing input of the National Science Board and look forward to reviewing this year’s Indicators.”
