House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Democratic Caucus Organizes for the 117th Congress

(Washington, DC) – Today, the Democratic Caucus of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee held an organizational meeting to elect a Vice-Chair, Subcommittee Chairs, and to select subcommittee assignments.

Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) said, “It is an honor and a privilege to welcome our new and returning Members to the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee and to begin a second term as Chairwoman. I am proud of the many bipartisan accomplishments of this Committee last Congress and look forward to resuming our work of dealing with the impacts of COVID on the nation’s research enterprise, addressing the climate crisis, fighting for scientific integrity throughout the Federal government, and ensuring the U.S. remains a leader in science and innovation. I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle who represent a diverse cross-section of Americans and who all bring a unique array of experiences and perspectives to the Committee. I’m excited to get started.”

 

Congressman Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) was elected Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy.

“As chair of the Energy Subcommittee, I look forward to passing visionary policy that seeks to infuse climate justice with economic and racial justice,” Rep. Bowman said. “We can heal our planet and use cleaner and more efficient sources of energy while creating green jobs. Now is the time to usher in the decade of the Green New Deal and ensure environmental justice for all, and I look forward to carrying out that mission along with my colleagues on the Energy Subcommittee for the 117th Congress.”

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) was elected Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Environment.

“Residents in North Jersey care deeply about clean air, clean drinking water, and our public spaces,” said Rep. Sherrill.“Protecting our environment, improving federal responses to climate change, and growing our clean energy economy are urgent priorities for Americans across the country. Last Congress, we worked on many key initiatives in the Environment Subcommittee and I look forward to building on that record with my colleagues during the 117th Congress.”

Congressman Bill Foster (D-IL) was elected Chairman of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight.

"I am honored to return as chairman of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight and ready to work with my colleagues to defend scientific integrity across our government," Congressman Foster said. "The Biden administration has put science back to the forefront of policymaking and understands just how important federal research is to our nation’s ability to confront challenges and support the innovation that maintains the competitiveness of our economy. I look forward to working with Chairwoman Johnson and the administration to support the scientists and researchers at our federal agencies."

Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) was elected full Committee Vice-Chair and Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Research and Technology.

“I am honored to again serve as the Chair of the Research & Technology Subcommittee, where we will build on our strong record of bipartisan hearings and legislation for the advancement of federal scientific research, which is of particular importance to Michigan's 11th district,” said Congresswoman Stevens. “I am also thrilled to have been elected as Vice Chair of the full Committee for the 117th Congress. Under the amazing leadership of Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, I will work with the Science, Space & Technology Committee on initiatives to keep the United States at the forefront of global scientific innovation and to accelerate our country’s economic recovery.”

Congressman Don Beyer (D-VA) was elected Chairman of the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.

“I am humbled and honored to have been selected as the Chairman for the Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee of the Science, Space and Technology Committee,” said Congressman Beyer. “Over the last year, we witnessed some of the most impactful moments for U.S. space exploration in decades. As someone who has long supported NASA’s important work on earth sciences, I am also excited to advance a climate-driven agenda, working hand in hand with NASA’s new climate advisor and advancing research into cleaner modes of flight. I am eager to boldly go forward with this important work with my colleagues in the 117th Congress for an ambitious space and aeronautics agenda.”
