Lofgren and Amo Condemn Trump Administration Plan to Shut Down NOAA Research Websites and Their Data
The members call out the administration for its latest attempt to censor science and demand the websites be saved.
(Washington, DC) – Last night, reporting revealed that the Trump administration plans to shut down websites associated with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) research division. President Trump and Commerce Secretary Lutnick plan to cancel the contracts of webservers that support these websites. If the websites are eliminated, the climate and weather data hosted on these sites would also be lost.
Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) and Subcommittee on Environment Ranking Member Gabe Amo (RI-1) made the following statement:
“President Trump and Commerce Secretary Lutnick’s scheme to shut down NOAA websites and lose their data is dangerous, cheap, and shortsighted,” said Ranking Members Lofgren and Amo. “Scientists, researchers, and meteorologists rely on these websites and their data to keep people safe and informed. This is the Trump administration’s latest attempt to censor science and steal from the American taxpayer by cancelling programs that have already been paid for.
“If Lutnick lets these websites go dark and their data be lost, it will kneecap our already strained forecasting capabilities. Seven people just died after tornadoes ripped through the Midwest this week. We’re in the midst of tornado season and hurricane season is on the horizon—and the person in charge of overseeing the agency whose mission it is to protect lives and property wants to gut their ability to carry out that mission. It begs the question, is Lutnick intentionally breaking our weather forecasting capabilities as an excuse to carry out the dangerous Project 2025 proposal to privatize the weather service? Lutnick needs to wake up and do the job he swore an oath for. This will cost American lives and it cannot stand. As leaders of the House Science Committee, we demand these contracts stay active and these websites stay up.”
