Members Hail Successful Launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis

(Washington, DC) This afternoon the Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-122) lifted off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida en route to the International Space Station (ISS).

Leaders of the U.S. House Committee on Science and Technology – the Committee with jurisdiction over U.S. civil space and aeronautics activity – offered the following comments on the successful launch and upcoming mission:

Committee Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN):

“I want to wish the crew of Atlantis a safe journey as they embark on an important and challenging mission to continue the construction of the International Space Station. I welcome the upcoming installation on ISS of Europe’s Columbus module. This mission to the ISS demonstrates what can be accomplished when nations work together on challenging goals in space exploration. “

Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Chairman Mark Udall (D-CO):

“The mission ahead is indeed a historic one that is centered on the addition of one of Europe’s main contributions to the ISS, the Columbus laboratory module. This addition to the ISS is a significant step towards the completion of the Station, and I look forward to the expansion in research capabilities that this module will provide.”
