NSB Report Affirms Need for Action on Science/Math Education

A report released today by the National Science Board (NSB), America’s Pressing Challenge – Building a Stronger Foundation, affirms the efforts of U.S. House Science Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) to improve U.S. standings in math and science education.

"Once again, the facts speak for themselves on science and math preparedness and the effect on U.S. global competitiveness," said Rep. Gordon.  "Some of the nation’s foremost scientific minds today reminded us that without immediate and drastic changes in the nation’s math and science classrooms, the U.S. will lose its economic and intellectual edge."

As the Board’s report stated, "It is absolutely essential for our Nation’s long-term prosperity and security that we remain a world leader in science and technology.  Pre-college STEM education is the foundation of that leadership - it must receive our highest priority as a Nation."

NSB members have reviewed legislation Gordon introduced last fall specifically to address this priority.  Their review of H.R 4434, 10,000 Teachers, 10 Million Minds Science and Math Scholarship Act, found it shares the common goal of attracting the retaining "the best and brightest students and teaching professionals in STEM education."

Gordon has introduced the only House legislative package aimed at fully implementing a U.S. competitiveness plan.  In addition to H.R. 4434, the Gordon package – based on the widely acknowledged National Academy Report – also includes H.R. 4435, Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E) Act and H.R. 4596, Sowing the Seeds Through Science and Engineering Research Act
