Ranking Member Johnson Comments on New Report on Economic Costs of Climate Change
(Washington, DC) – Following the release of the report titled, Risky Business – The Economic Risks of Climate Change in the United States this week, Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology released the following statement:
“This sobering report from a non-partisan and well-respected group of leaders highlights the significant costs climate change has exacted and will continue to exact on our economy if we don’t act now. The report presents a long list of concerns regarding the impact of climate change and shines a light on the cost of inaction to private businesses across the country. The future of our environment is a grave concern for our children and grandchildren, but the economic vitality of the United States is being threatened today by human-caused global warming.”
Several pressing concerns are detailed in the executive summary of the report, including, “The signature effects of human-induced climate change—rising seas, increased damage from storm surge, more frequent bouts of extreme heat—all have specific, measurable impacts on our nation’s current assets and ongoing economic activity.
The co-chairs of the report are Michael R. Bloomberg, former Mayor of the City of New York and Founder of Bloomberg L.P.; Henry M. Paulson, Jr., former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury and Chairman of The Paulson Institute; and Tom Steyer, retired Founder of Farallon Capital Management, LLC.
