Ranking Member Johnson Honors 2011 Nobel Laureates

(Washington, DC) –Recently, researchers in the fields of chemistry, physics, medicine or physiology, and economics received the 2011 Nobel Prize for their contributions to the sciences.  Of the nine winners in these fields, eight are either from the U.S. or were working in the U.S. at the time of their award winning research.  Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) met with the 2011 Nobel Laureates  who were attending a reception in their honor yesterday at the Blair House at the invitation of Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology and Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.  A list of Honored Laureates is below.

Dr. Saul Perlmutter, Physics

Dr. Adam G. Riess, Physics

Dr. Brian P. Schmidt, Physics

Dr. Bruce A. Beutler, Physiology or Medicine

Dr. Ralph M. Steinman, Physiology or Medicine (in memoriam)

Dr. Thomas J. Sargent, Economic Sciences

Dr. Christopher A. Sims, Economic Sciences

Ranking Member Johnson offered the following statement.

“I sincerely admire the recipients for their hard work and dedication to their respective fields.  The accomplishments of these scientists are significant achievements and further promote the U.S. as a world leader in science.  I applaud them and wish them luck on their future endeavors.  I hope that we continue to invest in science, technology, engineering, math, and research and innovation.  If we don’t, I fear that the U.S. is in danger of losing its competitive edge.”
