Ranking Member Johnson Salutes NASA’s Space Shuttle Program
Early this morning, Space Shuttle Atlantis landed at the Kennedy Space Center, closing out a storied 30-year program. Commenting on today’s successful landing, Committee Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) congratulated the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), its civil servant and contractor Shuttle team, and the Atlantis crew—Chris Ferguson, commander; Doug Hurley, pilot; and mission specialists Rex Walheim and Sandy Magnus—for a job well done. Congresswoman Johnson added “While today’s landing of Space Shuttle Atlantis represents a significant milestone in America’s space program, it is only the closing of one chapter. The retirement of the Shuttle should not and cannot be viewed as an end to America’s space program. Working with the President, we in Congress need to provide the resources necessary to allow NASA to maintain a strong and vibrant human space flight program through productive utilization of the International Space Station and expeditious development of the new manned vehicles needed to travel beyond low-Earth orbit. Our space program is an investment in this nation’s future.”
