Ranking Member Lofgren Condemns Radical Changes to NSF Initiatives
(Washington, DC) — Yesterday, National Science Foundation (NSF) Acting Director Brian Stone released a statement titled “NSF leadership in a new golden age of science,” outlining how NSF is implementing White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Director Michael Kratsios' Science: A New Golden Age and the Fiscal Year 2028 OMB-OSTP R&D Budget Priorities Memorandum. In this statement, Acting Director Stone verifies NSF’s intentions to implement Director Kratsios’ initiatives that will reallocate funding from congressionally approved programs to White House pet projects.
Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren made the following statement:
"I do not know why Acting Director Brian Stone and OSTP Director Michael Kratsios believe they possess the authority to impose such radical changes at America's premier scientific agency without congressional input or authorization. The Trump Administration has profoundly damaged NSF with its repeated attacks against the agency and the scientific community it was created to support. NSF needs to stop, take 10 steps back, and remember the values that made it the envy of the world for 75 years. I do not intend to abandon those values, and I will fight for them as we conduct oversight of these changes in the months to come."
