Ranking Member Lofgren Honors Hidden Figures at Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Yesterday, Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) attended a Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony honoring Katherine Johnson, Dr. Christine Darden, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and all the women computers, mathematicians, and engineers at NASA and NACA during the Space Race. These medals were awarded as a result of the Hidden Figures Congressional Gold Medal Act, which was led in the House by former Science Committee Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, and was enacted into law 2019.

“It was an honor to be in attendance at yesterday's Congressional Gold Medal ceremony honoring NASA’s Hidden Figures,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “Katherine Johnson, Dr. Christine Darden, Dorothy Vaughan, Mary Jackson, and all the women of NASA during this time were trailblazers. In the early days of the space program, women and their talents were critically important but often overlooked. On top of that, women of color faced the additional daily indignity of racial segregation. Despite the cruel adversities they faced, these women pressed on, and the success of our space program is due in large part to their brilliance, hard work, and perseverance. The Hidden Figures we celebrated yesterday went unrecognized for their contributions for far too long. Thanks to the tireless work of my predecessor, Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson, they have now received Congress’s highest civilian honor.”
