Ranking Member Lofgren Reacts to Biden Administration Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Today, President Biden signed a sweeping Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence (AI). The Order intends to create a safe, secure, and trustworthy AI landscape and ensure the U.S. is positioned to lead in this quickly moving technology. The Executive Order builds upon the work of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology’s National AI Initiative Act and the CHIPS and Science Act.

“I applaud the Biden-Harris Administration on this sweeping executive order to support civil liberties and promote the development and deployment of trustworthy AI across our economy,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “This important executive order builds upon the work of the Science Committee in the National AI Initiative Act and the CHIPS and Science Act to promote critical research, workforce development, and standards activities for AI, cybersecurity, and privacy-enhancing technologies. This action also seeks to bolster the adoption of standards to improve trust in the technology through federal deployment and coordination with the private sector.

“While this executive order is a great step forward, Congress will need to act to ensure governance of AI,” Ranking Member Lofgren continued. “Not only must Congress adequately fund our federal science agencies to be able to do the important research and standards development described in this executive order, but I believe Congress must consider further regulations to protect Americans against demonstrable harms from AI systems.”
