Ranking Member Lofgren Statement on Announcement of Preliminary Terms of CHIPS and Science Act Support for U.S. National Security Project with BAE Systems
(WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) announced the first preliminary memorandum of terms (PMT) with BAE Systems Electronic Systems. Once finalized, through funding authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act, BAE Systems will receive $35 Million in federal incentives to make necessary improvements to their Microelectronics Center in Nashua, New Hampshire. The project will replace aging tools and quadruple the production of chips necessary for critical defense programs including the F-35 fighter jet program.
“The CHIPS and Science Act was always about ushering in a strong future for the United States,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “From supporting our cutting-edge research efforts to advancing our national security, the CHIPS and Science Act is well underway in enabling that future. As Ranking Member of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee—where so much of this legislation began—I’m very proud to see the Biden-Harris Administration continue to deliver on its promises to revitalize American semiconductor manufacturing. Once finalized, the PMT announced today will help to strengthen our national security and create good-paying jobs. I look forward to learning of upcoming project announcements as we continue the implementation of the CHIPS and Science Act.”
