Ranking Member Lofgren Statement on House Passage of FAA Reauthorization
WASHINGTON, DC—Today, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to reauthorize the activities of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for five years. The bill includes research and development provisions that moved on a bipartisan basis through the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. The Science Committee has jurisdiction over all R&D activities at FAA.
“The FAA reauthorization that passed the House today will help usher a strong future for the organization and support our continued leadership in aviation,” said Ranking Member Lofgren. “So many Americans depend daily on the work of the FAA in ensuring a reliable and efficient aviation system. The United States has a strong record of aviation safety—and FAA research and development is important to sustaining that success. Well-supported R&D at the FAA will also help us to prepare for the safe integration of new and innovative aviation systems into the national airspace system.”
The Ranking Member continued, “I’m glad that this bill passed the House today, but I do remain very concerned about the use of lead-based fuels in some aircraft. This leaded fuel is impacting communities like ones in my district that live nearby airports—where we’re finding elevated blood lead levels in children due to exposure from leaded aviation fuel. This is an urgent problem that puts children and others in harm’s way. The use of lead-based aviation fuels needs to end as soon as possible, and I remain committed to accelerating the R&D and other efforts that will help us achieve that.”
