Ranking Member Lofgren Statement on the Devastating Flooding in Texas
(Washington, DC) – Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (CA-18) made the following statement on the recent flooding and ongoing search and rescue efforts taking place in and around Kerr County, TX:
"My thoughts are with the communities and families impacted by the devastating flooding in Texas,” said Ranking Member Lofgren. “As first responders continue to search for those still missing and Texas works to recover from this ongoing tragedy, many questions will need to be answered. Climate change continues to supercharge extreme weather events, bringing about unprecedented dangers, like the flooding in Kerr County and surrounding areas. We have to increase our support for efforts to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis, not pull back on this critical work as the current administration has done in the last six months. And we absolutely must support the hardworking federal employees who are tasked with keeping Americans safe and informed at the National Weather Service. These offices were already working with very little even before this administration’s reckless gutting of the federal workforce. We know warnings were issued, and it’s been reported that coordination of emergency response may have been hindered because of these NWS vacancies. As Ranking Member of the Science Committee, I’m committed to getting answers to these pressing questions in the coming months.”
