Ranking Member Lofgren's Statement on MAGA Republicans’ Irresponsible Appropriations Bills
(WASHINGTON, DC) — Yesterday, the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies appropriations bill passed the House of Representatives. The bill includes a massive $1.8 billion cut to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) compared to the FY 2024 enacted level, and is $3.6 billion below the FY 2025 budget request. House Republicans also attempted to pass their Energy and Water appropriations bill this week, which includes funds for the Department of Energy (DOE). The bill significantly slashes funding for the DOE, with a cut of $407 million below the FY 2024 enacted level and $2 billion below the FY 2025 request. The Energy and Water bill was pulled from floor consideration.
“Extreme MAGA Republicans are already at work implementing Trump's Project 2025 agenda with the anti-environment appropriations bills they brought to the floor this week,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “After massively slashing support last night for critical EPA priorities like environmental justice and climate science, Republicans have put the power back in the pockets of big polluters, not their constituents.
The Ranking Member continued, “Many of their bills were too irresponsible for them to bring to the floor without failing. The now-tabled Energy and Water appropriations bill was riddled with massive cuts to vital clean energy programs that have allowed us to lead in energy innovation and put us on a path to a clean energy future. MAGA Republicans continue to occupy themselves not with the needs of the American people but with their own apparent agenda of handing over our leadership in science and technology to our adversaries. I hope Republican leadership will take this as a lesson to stop wasting everyone’s time and bring forward better bills that have a chance of becoming law when we return in September.”
