Science Committee Organizes Democratic Caucus for 116th Congress

(Washington, DC) – The Democratic Caucus of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee today held an organizational meeting to elect a Vice-Chairman, Subcommittee Chairs, and to select subcommittee assignments.

Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) said, “The Science Committee has the responsibility of working to enhance America’s competitiveness by promoting the advancement of our nation’s research, development, and innovation enterprise, in addition to explore emerging science and technology issues. We have assembled a strong group of Members to do just that. I look forward to collaborating with our Ranking Member Frank Lucas and all of our Members as we begin working constructively to find solutions for the nation’s challenges of today and tomorrow.”

Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA) was elected Vice-Chairman.

“It’s an honor to be elected as the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology,” said Rep. Bera, M.D. “The United States is the world leader in science and technology, but our global leadership is at risk without continued federal investment and support. The Committee’s work will be critical for our nation’s economic competitiveness and the health and safety of our families. We have a responsibility to ask tough questions about how and where taxpayer dollars are best used and I look forward to working alongside Chairwoman Johnson and our colleagues to address the important challenges that our country and planet face.”

Congressman Conor Lamb (D-PA) was elected Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy.

“In my district, energy means family-supporting jobs and cutting-edge science.  The work of the Energy Subcommittee of the Science, Space and Technology Committee is critical to our region,” said Congressman Lamb.  “I look forward to working with Chairwoman Johnson (D-TX) and Ranking Member Lucas (R-OK) and all members of the committee to ensure America continues its leadership in this critical sector.”

Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX) was elected Chair of the Subcommittee on Environment.

Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) was elected Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight.

“Federal research is vital to the innovation that drives our local economy and global competitiveness,” said Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill. “I am proud to lead the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee in support of the independence and integrity of science and scientists advancing the fields of energy, space, and transportation.”

Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-MI) was elected Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Research and Technology.

“As the new Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Research and Technology, I look forward to working with the National Science Foundation, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and our nation’s great research universities to promote innovation and investment in critical research and development efforts to maintain our global competitiveness right here in southeastern Michigan.”

Congresswoman Kendra Horn (D-OK) was elected Chair of the Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics.
