Science Democrats Congratulate Nobel Physics Prize Winners

U.S. House Science Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) and Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) today offered their congratulations to the 2006 Nobel Prize for Physics winners Dr. John Mather of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Dr. George Smoot of the University of California at Berkeley.

Drs. Mather and Smoot were recognized for their groundbreaking research on the early history of the universe.  That research was enabled by NASA’s Cosmic Background Explorer (COBE), which measured the microwave background variations in the infant universe.

"I want to congratulate Drs. Mather and Smoot for this well-deserved honor.  The COBE mission and the research results that have flowed from it stand as an outstanding example of the benefits the nation receives from its investments in NASA’s science programs," said Rep. Gordon.

"Without taking anything away from the outstanding accomplishments of Dr. John Mather and Dr. George Smoot, I believe that they would be the first to agree that their research results would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of literally hundreds of scientists and engineers.  My congratulations to them and to the entire COBE team," added Rep. Udall.
