Science Democrats Salute the 25th Anniversary of First Space Shuttle Flight

Democratic Members of the House Science Committee today expressed their strong support for a resolution honoring astronauts John Young and Robert Crippen on the 25th anniversary of the first flight of the Space Shuttle.

Mission emblem for the first Space Shuttle crew"I am proud to be an original cosponsor of the resolution.  Astronauts Young and Crippen personify ‘The Right Stuff,’ and we owe them and the entire Space Shuttle team - civil servants and contractors - our thanks for twenty-five years of dedicated service and achievement," said Ranking Member Bart Gordon (D-TN).

"April 12, 1981 marked the opening of an important new chapter in America’s human space flight program.  It is fitting that we pause to commemorate the accomplishments of Commander Young and Pilot Crippen," added Space and Aeronautics Subcommittee Ranking Member Mark Udall (D-CO).

"Our desire to explore space, to go beyond this world, is rooted firmly in a human desire that has existed since the first of us stared into the night sky.  It is a desire that has been passed down through human history and has found deep roots in America.  We live in a land where pioneers stood on the frontier and bravely journeyed beyond what was known.  Our space program continues that proud tradition of accomplishments," stated ETS Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. David Wu (D-OR).

H. Con. Res. 366 passed the House this evening by a unanimous vote, 422-0.
