Science, Space, and Technology Committee Approves New Subcommittee Chairs
(Washington, DC) – Today the Democratic Caucus of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee unanimously approved the appointment of new Chairs for the Subcommittees on Energy, Environment, and Investigations and Oversight. This change in the Committee roster comes after Subcommittee on Energy Chairman Conor Lamb was appointed to the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
“I would like to welcome all of the Science, Space, and Technology Committee Members to the second session of the 116th Congress,” said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX). “We made great progress in 2019, and I look forward to another productive year working with our new and returning Subcommittee Chairs and Members as we continue to pursue a constructive and bipartisan legislative agenda to advance our nation’s research, development, and innovation enterprise and find solutions to the many challenges facing our nation today.”
Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX) was elected Chair of the Subcommittee on Energy.
“I am proud and honored to be elected Chair for the Energy Subcommittee. As the representative for the energy capital of the world, I have worked with my colleagues, subject matter experts, and my constituents to learn about, invest in, and advocate for our country’s energy needs,” said Congresswoman Fletcher. “I look forward to leading the committee’s vital work to support the critical research and development efforts our country needs for our energy future.”
Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) was elected Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Environment.
“I am pleased to have the opportunity to lead the Subcommittee on Environment which oversees environmental, climate change, and weather research,” said Representative Sherrill. “New Jerseyans know the importance of clean air, clean drinking water, and protecting our natural resources. Our state has the largest investment in offshore wind in the country, and I look forward to further promoting this important innovation to protect our environment. As Chairwoman, I will be able to more directly support critical environmental research that grows our clean energy economy, improves our national security, and secures New Jersey’s future.”
Rep. Bill Foster (D-IL) was elected as Chairman of the Subcommittee on Investigations and Oversight.
“As a scientist who spent 24 years working at one of America’s great national laboratories, I know firsthand just how critical federal research is to our nation’s ability to confront challenges and for supporting the innovation that maintains the competitiveness of our economy,” Foster said. “American science is being threatened from many directions, and government should be a productive and valuable partner in maintaining its integrity. I am proud to lead the subcommittee responsible for defending that scientific integrity, and I look forwarded to working with Chairwoman Johnson to continue supporting the scientists and researchers at our federal agencies.”
