Chairwoman Johnson Applauds EPA Decision to Ban Chlorpyrifos on Food
(Washington, DC) – Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a ban on the use of chlorpyrifos on food. Chlorpyrifos is an agricultural pesticide that has been found to be neurotoxic to children and developing fetuses. The ban is a response to an order from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals directing a revocation of allowable residue levels in food.
Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson made the following statement:
“I applaud Administrator Regan’s decision to ban the use of chlorpyrifos on food. As I wrote in my letter to the Administrator upon his confirmation, the failure of the last administration to ban this dangerous pesticide was an abdication of the Agency’s duty to protect human health, and was a consequence of its implementation of the illegal Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science rule. It is gratifying to see the EPA once again adhere to the best available science when making critical regulatory decisions. I congratulate the Agency in moving swiftly to address such a serious threat to the health of children and developing fetuses.”
