Chairwoman Stevens Applauds House Passage of SBIR and STTR Extension Act
(Washington, DC) – Today, the House passed S. 4900, the SBIR and STTR Extension Act of 2022. S. 4900 reauthorizes the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program, the Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) program, and related pilot programs. The SBIR and STTR programs are administered by various federal agencies and provide competitive awards for domestic small businesses to conduct research and development projects that have the potential for commercialization.
“The Small Business Innovation Research program (SBIR) is known for its tagline of ‘America’s seed fund’ as it inspires small businesses across the country to transform their ideas into marketable products and services,” said Research and Technology Subcommittee Chairwoman Haley Stevens (D-MI). “Today, I am proud to have voted to extend the SBIR and STTR to add much-needed stability to the program. Over the past five years, the SBIR program has awarded small businesses in Michigan more than $348 million in funding for R&D. I have seen the powerful impact of the SBIR program firsthand and how transformational it is for manufacturers and small businesses in my district. While extending the program was my number one priority, I look forward to continuing conversations with my colleagues on opportunities to strengthen the program – such as, expanding its outreach in the future to reach more first-time entrepreneurs, especially Black, Hispanic, Indigenous, and women entrepreneurs, whose innovations and businesses have long been underfunded.”
