Gordon, Udall Congratulate NASA on Successful Shuttle Launch

Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-116) lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida this evening marking NASA’s first night launch since 2002. Discovery begins a 12-day mission to continue building the International Space Station.

U.S. House Science Committee Ranking Member Rep. Bart Gordon (D-TN) and Space Subcommittee Ranking Member Rep. Mark Udall (D-CO) offered the following comments after the launch:

Ranking Member Gordon: "STS-116 looks to be off to a great start. During their flight, the astronauts will be conducting some of the most complex and challenging International Space Station assembly tasks imaginable. Commander Polansky and his Discovery crew have spent years training for this mission and I wish them all the best for a successful mission and a safe return."

Rep. Udall: "Rewiring the space station is not as simple as plugging in an electrical line and turning on the switch – it is a major challenge. Our astronauts embarked today on a mission essential to the future use and productivity of the International Space Station – one that they've looked forward to for quite a while. We wish the Discovery and her crew a safe journey and successful mission."
