Lofgren and Obernolte Introduce Bill to Accelerate Development of the Fusion Workforce
(Washington, DC) – Today, Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Research and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Jay Obernolte (R-CA) introduced the STEM Education and Skilled Technical Workforce for Fusion Act. The bill would authorize activities at the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy to support the retention, development, and growth of a fusion workforce.
“Fusion is the future,” said Ranking Member Lofgren. “To power that future, we need a highly skilled workforce ready to make this limitless and zero-emission power source a reality for all. The incredible potential of our fusion research enterprise is part of what inspired me to run for Congress. Now we need to match the momentum of recent fusion breakthroughs by continuing to build up the foundation of fusion energy in America--in both the private and public sector. This bipartisan bill is an important step in achieving that. I thank Mr. Obernolte for joining me on this legislation and look forward to it moving through Congress.”
“As Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Research and Technology and Co-Chair of the Congressional Fusion Energy Caucus, I’m proud to join House Science Space and Technology Committee Ranking Member Lofgren in introducing this bipartisan bill,” said Rep. Obernolte. “Fusion energy holds extraordinary promise to provide America with abundant, clean, and reliable power, but realizing that promise will require a uniquely skilled workforce. By investing in STEM education and technical training, we can ensure that the United States leads the world in developing and deploying this revolutionary technology.”
