Ranking Member Johnson’s Statement on the Administration’s Announcement on Cutting Methane Emissions

(Washington, DC) – Today, as part of the Climate Action Plan, the Administration announced a new goal to cut methane emissions from the oil and gas sector by 40 – 45 percent from 2012 levels by 2025, and a set of actions to help achieve this goal.

Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) said the following.

“Thanks in part to federal investments in climate science research, we know that although carbon dioxide is the greenhouse gas we hear about most, methane is about 25 times more potent as a heat-trapping gas and that it contributes to the formation of ozone which is associated with increased asthma attacks. Reducing the amount of methane is important for combating climate change and protecting public health and I am pleased that the Administration is taking action. I look forward to seeing the details of the Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed rule this summer and to working with the Administration on this and on the other segments of the Climate Action Plan.”
