Ranking Member Lofgren Applauds Innovation, Fusion Funding Gains in President Biden’s Budget Request

(Washington, DC)--Yesterday, President Biden released his Budget Request for FY 24. The Budget includes substantial increases for scientific efforts under the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology’s jurisdiction.

“I’m encouraged by the promise represented in the President’s Budget Request released yesterday,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA). “I’m especially encouraged about the strong funding the President has called for to support our fusion energy efforts. We have seen incredible breakthroughs in fusion in the last 18 months—and we cannot afford to lose momentum. I applaud the Administration’s commitment to this endeavor. To secure and support our leadership in fusion, we must bolster our investments in this potentially transformational emerging industry. The President makes clear in his budget his commitment to fostering a clean energy future, supporting a diverse STEM workforce, building up our innovation enterprise, and addressing the climate crisis head on.

The Ranking Member continued, “while the budget request doesn’t include everything that we worked hard to authorize in the CHIPS and Science Act, it provides for substantial progress for our federal science efforts. The National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Energy’s Office of Science all received very significant increases in this budget. We now need to ensure that Congress matches the President’s vision by fully funding our science and technology accounts.”
