Ranking Members Lofgren and Sorensen Applaud NASA’s New Space Sustainability Strategy

(WASHINGTON, DC) – Yesterday, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released the first part of its integrated Space Sustainability Strategy to address a rapidly changing space environment and ensure its preservation for future generations. The strategy will help establish new methods of reaching sustainability goals while incentivizing best practices across the global space community.

Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Subcommittee on Space and Aeronautics Ranking Member Eric Sorensen (D-IL) made the following statement:

“NASA has just taken an important step in ensuring the U.S. continues to lead as stewards of safety in space,” said Ranking Members Lofgren and Sorensen. “As our agencies, like NASA, continue to innovate, explore, and operate in space; the commercial space sector booms; and the number of spacefaring nations increases—space becomes increasingly crowded. We must do everything we can to facilitate a space environment that will sustain safe space exploration and discovery for the long term. At a time when no universal space sustainability framework exists, NASA’s whole-of-agency approach will help close a critical gap in assessing, incentivizing, and coordinating sustainable operations with the global space community. We look forward to working with NASA, the Administration, and the stakeholder community as the United States leads a coordinated, global response to ensure the safety, stability, and sustainability of the space environment now and into the future.”
