Science Committee Leaders Lofgren and Stevens Applaud Biden Announcement of Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Tech
(Washington, DC)—This morning, the White House announced a National Standards Strategy for Critical and Emerging Technologies. Standards are the guidelines used to ensure the technology Americans routinely rely on is universally safe and interoperable. The National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) will lead in implementing this strategy.
“Maintaining U.S. leadership in technical standards is essential to maintaining our competitiveness in advanced industries,” said Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA) and Ranking Member of the Research and Technology Subcommittee Haley Stevens (D-MI). “The Science Committee has long championed the U.S. approach to standard setting based on open, voluntary, industry-led, and consensus-based processes. We led the development of key international standards provisions in the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which would improve government coordination and bolster the participation of U.S. stakeholders in international standards discussions. We applaud the Biden-Harris Administration for the forward-looking strategy to ensure the Federal government is supporting our Nation’s diverse innovators in standards setting for critical and emerging technologies.”
