Science Committee Members Lofgren, Ross, Foushee, and Jackson Statement on Start of President Biden’s Invest in America Tour
(Washington, DC)—Today, President Biden began his Invest In America Tour in Durham, North Carolina. The Tour highlights the historic investments made possible by the CHIPS and Science Act, which was led in the House by the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. The President will also be showcasing the Inflation Reduction Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Wolfspeed, a semiconductor manufacturer, recently announced it will invest $5 billion to build a semiconductor fabrication plant and create 1,800 jobs in North Carolina.
Ranking Member Zoe Lofgren (D-CA), Representative Deborah Ross (D-NC), Representative Valerie Foushee (D-NC), and Representative Jeff Jackson (D-NC) made the following statement.
“When Members of the Science Committee led the CHIPS and Science Act to the President’s desk last summer, they did so with states like North Carolina in mind,” the Members said. “It’s fitting the President is starting his Investing in America tour there. North Carolina represents a strong intersection of coastal, rural, urban, and academic communities. The CHIPS and Science Act makes investments in each of these types of communities across the country and unites them to secure our leadership in science and innovation. This legislation is revitalizing our semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, rebuilding and expanding our scientific infrastructure, bolstering once-in-a-generation support for research and innovation, and building a diverse STEM workforce. These investments will bring solutions to our greatest challenges like the climate crisis. Americans across the nation are reaping the rewards of this transformational law, and we can see that with the jobs and opportunity it is creating in North Carolina. As Members of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, we will continue to work to ensure all the funding put forth in the CHIPS and Science Act comes to fruition. When we invest in America, we invest in a better future for communities like Durham, Raleigh, Charlotte, and our rural and coastal communities.”
